LVRR: What college will you attend and what is your intended major of study? Do you plan to run while attending college?
MS: I will be attending Auburn University this fall and will be majoring in Biomedical sciences following the pre dental track. I am not running for the school but plan to join their running club.
LVRR: What age did you start running and why?
MS: I started running when I was a freshman in high school because I always found it as something that I
enjoyed doing and also something that challenged me.
LVRR: What is your greatest accomplishment in your running career?
MS: My greatest accomplishment is medaling at States in the 4×800.
LVRR: Describe an experience where you had to “sink or swim.” What did you learn from it?
MS: One experience where I had to sink or swim was this past spring the day before districts. While I was doing strides to loosen up for the next day, I pulled something in my back and could barely move immediately after. I decided to still run the next day and our team finished first. I learned that day that if Ibelieve in myself and have the right mentality anything is possible.
LVRR: Who has been your most influential role model and why?
MS: My most influential role models in running would have to be all my coaches. I joined the track team as a soccer player not knowing much about running and they helped me become the runner I am today.
LVRR: What would most people be surprised to learn about you?
MS: One thing people would be surprised to learn about me is that I love to cook.
LVRR: What is one word you would say to someone who has just started running– whether it be a youth in the LVRR Kids Series, or an older individual- about why running is worth it?
MS: My one word would be focus. Running is such a mental sport and if their head is not in the right space, they are more likely to give up. If they focus on their breathing, pace, and goal for their run they will have a much better chance of accomplishing whatever they were hoping to get out of that run.
LVRR: What events did you run in high school?
MS: I ran the 800m and the 4x800m relay.
LVRR: How do you stay motivated when you don’t want to run?
MS: When I don’t feel much motivation to run, I always reach out to my friends to see if they can join me that day. Running with them helps take my mind off any struggles and provides so much support.
LVRR: What are the top three “little things” that you do to prevent injury?
MS: The most important thing that I do to prevent injury is stretching. I make sure to stretch before and after every run. My second is to eat healthy. If you’re not fueling your body with nutrients its really easy for it to start breaking down. And, I also make sure to ice anything thar starts to hurt. Even if if it’s just a mild pain, icing help so much.
LVRR: What are your favorite pre-race and post-race meals?
MS: My favorite pre-race meal the night before is chicken with rice and vegetables. And, my favorite post-race meal is pizza.
LVRR: What are three activities you enjoy doing apart from running?
MS: I really enjoy hiking, biking, and lifting. My favorite part about working out is being outside so I like to do a lot of other outdoor activities as well.
