The City of Allentown was awarded the second place prize as a mid-sized City in the 2023 Childhood Obesity Prevention & Environmental Health and Sustainability Awards. This award is provided by a partnership between the U.S. Conference of Mayors and the American Beverage Foundation for a Healthy America.
Allentown applied to the contest with a project titled “The Marathon Mayor” and plans to encourage Allentown’s youth and families to get out and move in our city’s fabulous park system by highlighting our Mayor’s illustrious marathon career.
The City is proud to be partnering with the Lehigh Valley Road Runners to sponsor this year’s Kids’ Series as one of the activities in our “Marathon Mayor” project. We are excited to provide young people with the opportunity to experience the joys of competitive running.
Allentown is one of nine cities across the nation to share the $745,000 grant.
The nine U.S. cities receiving 2023 grant awards are:
- Charlotte, North Carolina
- Arlington, Texas
- Louisville, Kentucky
- Lansing, Michigan
- Allentown, Pennsylvania
- Gastonia, North Carolina
- Oak Park, Illinois
- Aguadilla, Puerto Rico
- Mount Vernon, New York
