Q&A with Jared Petre

LVRR: What college will you attend and what is your intended major of study? Do you plan to run while attending college?
JP: I am attending Moravian University and studying computer science and mathematics. I also plan on running in cross country and track.

LVRR: What age did you start running and why?
JP: I started running at the age of 12 in 5th grade due to me joining the run club called kids in motion. The club started at the beginning of spring, and we trained after school three days a week. After 6 weeks of running there was a 5k race around the school and I won. That win led to my love for running.

LVRR: What is your greatest accomplishment in your running career?
JP: Winning the 4x800m and 800m at districts this year since this was a goal of mine for all of high school.

LVRR: Describe an experience where you had to “sink or swim.” What did you learn from it?
JP: When I was younger, I competed in junior nationals triathlon, and halfway through the race I started to throw up. While I was on the ground a ton of thoughts went through my mind deciding whether to give up or not, but after I saw kids in my age group pass me I knew I had to push through. I got up and finished the rest of the race finishing 2nd in my age group. From this experience I learned that even though it feels like you can’t keep going, think positive and you’ll get through it and surprise yourself.

LVRR: Who has been your most influential role model and why?
JP: My most influential role model has been my big brother, he has supported me and shown me what it is to be a good runner and person. He’s taught me how to train and how sometimes things aren’t going to go my way.

LVRR: What would most people be surprised to learn about you?
JP: That I don’t fully love running, but the people around me make all the hard work worth it. Running truly sucks sometimes but having good teammates make it all worth it.

LVRR: What is one word you would say to someone who has just started running– whether it be a youth in the LVRR Kids Series, or an older individual- about why running is worth it?
JP: This sport is very mentally and physically challenging but the rewards you get from it are worth all of the struggle and pain.

LVRR: Is anyone else in your family a runner?
JP: My brother has been a runner since 5th grade until he just graduated from Moravian University.

LVRR: What events did you run in high school?
JP: I ran the 400, 4×400 800, 4×800, and 1600 the most.

LVRR: What is your favorite event to watch that you don’t do yourself and why?
JP: The 4x100m relay due to the insane speed and energy that is shown during that race.

LVRR: What are the top three “little things” that you do to prevent injury?
JP: Roll, hydrate, and sleep.

LVRR: What injuries are you susceptible to?
JP: Hamstring injuries.

LVRR: What are your favorite pre-race and post-race meals?
JP: Pasta and chicken.

LVRR: What are three activities you enjoy doing apart from running?
JP: Spike ball, pickleball, and video games.

LVRR: What extracurricular activities (outside of running) and community involvement have your participated in?
JP: Free, smooth, and motivated.

Jared attended Emmaus High School and will attend Movarian University to major in Computer Science & Mathematics
