Club members celebrated the new year with the annual Dip in Da Crick yesterday morning in Lehigh Parkway. The headcount this year was upwards of 80 or more people which we are considering a very successful year for our polar bear plunge.

Two hours later, we met up at Emmaus Community Park for another annual tradition, the New Year’s Day Run. Five miles up and down the mountain with a champagne stop midway at the top. There was also a 5k option. The run was followed by lunch and drinks at Fire Company #1 in Emmaus.

Over 400 kids participated in the July 9th event. The weather was perfect and lots of fun on tap! The 5th event was canceled this past Saturday due to the extreme heat but the 6th and final event is on schedule for August 6th. If including the Aug 6th event you have completed 4 events you can pick up your tee-shirt that day.

We are expecting the Lehigh Valley Zoo to be there with a few of their animals from 8 to 10.

As families began assembling at the Alpine Street trailhead to South Mountain Preserve they were met by a fire truck. Apparently, there was a smoldering fire at the Alpine Street playground which someone had tried to put out, unsuccessfully. A call to 911 had been placed by an unknown person and the fire truck arrived at the scene to take care of the problem.

Sixteen children and adults braved the heat as temperatures hovered around 100 degrees. The canopy of the forest helped make the hike more comfortable for the hikers, as did the cooler breeze on top of the ridge. Hikers also had the opportunity to dip their feet in the small mountain stream along the way.

The children had a great time climbing the 2 billion year old boulders and did great navigating the trails! We taught the kids how to look for trail blazes and then had them lead the way as we followed the orange blazed trail on the preserve. We also played a game of searching for wildlife and locating interesting things along the way.

Our next Family Hike will take place at Jacobsburg State Park in Belfast, PA on Thursday, July 28. Meet at 1:00 pm in the Environmental Education Center parking lot located off Jacobsburg Road.

Directions: Take Route 33 North to the Belfast/512 exit. Signs are located at the end of the turn off directing you to Jacobsburg State Park. At the end of the off ramp, turn left on 512 and then a left on Jacobsburg Road after passing under the highway. The parking lot is located ahead on your left.
